i can only say that i fully agree with your statement.
For the time being, I am using remember the milk(.com) witch with you can link a todo item to a location on the map (google maps api)

It is still a workaround, can't wait for google to make their own app more overlapping.
Imagine possibities with Mail - Calendar - Maps - Docs

I've been saying this for quite a while...Google's the new Microsoft. In addition to what you talked about, I think it's also true because of Google's services being more relevant to contemporary demands. The big reason people began sneering at Microsoft and calling it the evil empire is the fact that its OS was THE only one most people used...or knew existed for that matter. But nowadays, I think what OS you happen to like using is not such an important factor in most things. Tech help broadcaster Leo Laporte has said he thinks that the browser is the new OS. I generally agree - or at least to the point that what you do in a browser is a pretty huge part of the whole computer-using experience. Certainly much more than it used to be. And I don't need to explain how big of a role Google plays in this. I'd also point out that Microsoft's Xbox 360 no longer dominates the gaming market either - although that's Nintendo's doing of course, not Google's.

For these reasons, Google's acquisition of Microsoft's shadowy old throne has a lot to do with what Google actually offers us, not only the way they do business.

@Dave

Thanks for the link. It seems that he's going to Tech as well - small world.

Reading his "where do you think you will be in 5 years" section and realizing that I was 5 years down the road from where he is at made me stop and think a little. I don't think girls ever deal well with aging in general, but it definitely made me take a step back and remember my own goals when I was his age. I digress - although I might make a post about it later.

On topic though, I find that he does provide some good points, but from a research standpoint, this is the only product out there at the moment that is challenging traditional thought processes as to how we deal with interacting with traditional computing interfaces, information and bringing it to the public market at the same time. From a research standpoint, I have to get my hands on it :]

To address Paul's points, the fact that the screen may get dirty or that it is a little bulkier than most phones is no change for me considering I currently rely on the Treo for the past 3 years (and believe me I'm due for an upgrade). The iPhone is actually a bit smaller than my current Treo and I don't expect that the screen will get any dirtier than my current phone. I've read how others see that the touch keyboard will be a pain for actually typing on. I can see their point on this, but I'm hoping that my girlie small hands and nails will hopefully somehow be an advantage in that instance. I would also think that an onscreen keyboard maybe an added bonus as opposed to the small buttons that I usually trip over while typing.
Secretly I'm waiting for QWERTY to fall to the way side and for a new more robust keyboard layout to come out. People were able to easily adjust to using phones without full qwerty keyboards (where you have to hit the stupid button 3 times to get to the letter you want) that I don't think coming out with a more robust layout would take all that much adjustment. In fact, with the onscreen buttons and the ability to create 3rd party apps, I maybe the first one to put this new standard into the public to see how they do ;]

I've also seen the patents that Apple has filed for the 'rumored' second generation of the iPhone, and that one completely blows the mind. If you are in the market for a used iPhone at that point, I'll be selling mine to upgrade to the second generation ;]

I also want to interject that I've never owned an iPod because I was always waiting for them to cross the 100GB threshold so that I could store my entire music collection as well as use it as a backup hard-drive. While on a recent trip to NY I borrowed a video iPod and it completely changed things for me. I want that extra interaction am kicking myself for being stubborn and not jumping on the bandwagon sooner.
This fall I'm planning on using mass transit here in Atlanta when I move to my new place next to the Marta line and I expect the iPhone to be the perfect accompaniment for my commute - I can get all of my news, weather, watch or listen to podcasts and email people all while commuting to work. I might even purchase a .mac account if it would sync with the iPhone. I don't think there is anything else out there that can currently compare to that.

Plus, I'm all about fashionable accessories and it's the only smart phone that even remotely looks as cool as it performs.

By the way Heidi, I read this interesting post, (by Paul Stamatiou whose tech blog I read all the time) about the iPhone today. Although Paul's a big Apple fan, the entry explains some things about the iPhone's design that are giving him good reason not to buy it. I think he brings up some good points. Thought you'd be interested if you haven't seen it already.

Spider is in fact my favorite piece of content that you all have up there that I've seen so far.
It is only slightly ahead of the pac-man series and tech stuff series as well.

I completely understand the technical difficulties that you all face and applaud the fact that you all are taking the initiative of using newer technologies and pushing them as far as they will go.

Also, please don't be discouraged by my comparison with Joost - you all have gone a step in a different direction and are bringing about more acceptance of information architecture ideas, i.e. vj'd content, clarification and distribution of different types of content types and showcase independent content, that I hope will eventually become an internet mainstream application featureset - like comments and categories are to blog entries.

Would you all mind if I asked more indepth questions and actually interviewed you from a technical/product perspective at some point so that I could write an entry on the facts of the product as well as use it for my graduate research?

Hey Heidi

flash live streaming is a pretty unstable technology at the moment.
We have struggled with it throughout the year.
Beside that we really can't compete on technology with Joost and we don't compete with Joost.
Basically we have 1 senior programmer and a junior and that's it, they are probably gathering the best tech mind around and looks like an invincible armada to us.
We just focus on content and people while they are a massive distributor and a great technology player.

Thanks for your attention anyway.
We'll do all we can to improve our technology failure in the future.

I'd like to make up to our failure proposing you to watch this short movie we financed to Nash Edgerton.
